Kiln is thrilled to announce it is live on the new Holesky testnet which has gone live on September 28th.

This testnet represents yet another milestone in Ethereum's ongoing evolution, approximately one year on from the Merge.

💡 In a blockchain environment, a "testnet" is a separate network used for testing and experimentation purposes. It operates similarly to the main network, or "mainnet," but the tokens or assets on the testnet have no real-world value. This allows developers to test new features, smart contracts, or applications without risking real assets before they are implemented on the mainnet.

Replacing the existing Goerli testnet, Holesky is designed to stand as a robust testing ground for staking, infrastructure, and consensus-layer protocol development until 2028. It will work in parallel with Sepolia, another testnet that facilitates Ethereum applications testing on the execution layer.

What makes Holesky particularly exciting is its faster synchronization process and reduced disk space requirements. Additionally, the switch from Goerli is motivated by the increasing scarcity of testnet tokens preventing developers from smoothly testing their applications. Goerli testnet tokens were even trading for real value in early 2023.

Holesky addresses these challenges, setting the stage for upcoming Ethereum upgrades, including Cancun and Deneb. These upgrades, part of the roadmap, will introduce danksharding making layer-two rollups more efficient and cheaper to use. Ultimately, these advancements will enhance Ethereum's scalability in the long run.

To ensure a seamless transition for our users, Kiln remains committed to supporting the Goerli testnet until its planned shutdown in January 2024. This will provide developers ample time to migrate their projects and test cases from Goerli to Holesky, ensuring continuity and minimizing disruptions.
